3 Memories, Stories & Photos about Doris

Around mid 1965 Mrs. Fairbanks told me that "we saw dinosaurs" at the NY World's Fair. She gave me a pic or two of a dinosaur, part of a set being offered, and asked twice if I had sent away for the album for them(?). "You didn't?" At that time, I didn't know how to do that. But that summer I saw the Sinclair dinosaurs at the NY World's Fair myself.

Doris Fairbanks lived on Hawthorne street in Manchester CT, near my old home. She and her family lived in the house adjacent to (just north of) 113 Hawthorne st, where the the Hogans lived.
Doris had three kids, Lori, Pamela and David. I knew Pam in kindergarten and first grade. Back in the spring and summer of 1965 I occasionally went to her house.
Doris was nice enough to me but could be strict with her own kids especially her oldest one, Lori. On one occasion Lori bumped into David at the backdoor of their house and she said "David!" Mrs. Fairbanks then snarled at Lori. "You're gonna get it!" Lori had really done nothing. Another time, in the spring of 1966, while walking home with Lori I asked her what would happen if she threw a temper tantrum to get some toy she wanted. She said something like "there would be so much black and blue."
Lori had a traditional view of a woman's place in society, which she almost certainly got from her mother (Doris). When one day I asked Lori what would become of her and other girls she answered without hesitation "They grow up, get married and have kids."
Soon I lost touch with the Fairbanks as the kids were in different classes. They eventually left the public school system and went to East Catholic high. Lori graduated in 1974, Pam in 1977 and David in 1979(?).
