Introduction

Dorothy was a wife, mother of three, a homemaker. She was a wonderful person. She was a good cook and kept a clean home. Her husband was a Detroit firefighter and battalion chief. She was so kind and gentle. She died of lung cancer at age 62. She was a heavy smoker, unfortunately. She had TB as a teenager.

English and German. Her parents came from Ohio and Detroit.
Early Life & Education

She only went through the tenth grade. Her mother died and when Dorothy was around sixteen. I think she had to do the cooking and cleaning for her dad and brothers but I’m not sure if that is why. She also had TB and was sent to a hospital for a year.
Professional Career

She never worked outside the home.
Personal Life & Family

The only thing I can think of is that she liked to go to flea markets and toward the end of her life she and my grandfather would set up a table of vintage and antique items to sell at flea markets. I was happy that she was getting to enjoy something different.

In 1914, in the year that Dorothy Girardin was born, in June, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by a Yugoslavian national. Austria-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to Serbia. Other major powers took sides - and World War I began: Austria declared war on Serbia; Germany on Russia and France; Britain on Germany . . . and on it went until most of the world was embroiled in the war.

In 1938, she was 24 years old when on October 30th, a Sunday, The Mercury Theatre on the Air broadcast Orson Welles' special Halloween show The War of the World's. A clever take on H.G. Wells' novel, the show began with simulated "breaking news" of an invasion by Martians. Because of the realistic nature of the "news," there was a public outcry the next day, calling for regulation by the FCC. Although the current story is that many were fooled and panicked, in reality very few people were fooled. But the show made Orson Welles' career.
