Introduction

Dorothy Hensen, 91, of Perry passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at the Perry Lutheran Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Perry Bible Church in Perry. Burial was in the Woodward Cemetery at Woodward. Dorothy Louise Hensen was born on March 19, 1922, at Elma to William and Esther Ida (Bartels) Groth. She graduated from Boone High School. She was united in marriage to Emery Edward Hensen on April 24, 1942, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone. Dorothy was employed by Look Magazine in Des Moines as a filing clerk, then at J.C. Penny’s in Perry as a clerk and also at the Perry Lutheran Home as a cook. She was a member of the Perry Bible Church. Dorothy volunteered her time and was a grandmother to all. She taught herself and her family English, having immigrated from Germany, and was forced all of her growing years to write with the wrong hand, which led to a difficulty writing all of her life. She was loved by everyone who met her, and she had an enormous community presence in Perry. She was very devoted to her family and thoroughly loved playing with her grandchildren, hosting family and friends and preparing all the food for them. As they would leave, she would always tell them, “Toodaloo!” with a smile on her face. She enjoyed reading her Bible, the Daily Blessings devotional, dancing, playing cards, listening to Christian music, and riding the bus to Des Moines for shopping. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, William and Esther Groth, and a sister, Rosella Grover.
