  • Introduction

    Roy William Leeper was born to Ernest Reasoner Leeper and Jeanette Gibbs. He had three siblings: Ernest Wesley Leeper (1896-1989), Margaret R. Leeper (1900-1966), and Laverne Davidson Leeper (1910-1999). He graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1934 and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1938. He attended medical school at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), graduating in 1942. After medical school, Roy was commissioned in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1943. He served in New Guinea and during the occupation of Japan before being discharged in 1946. In 1947, he began a dermatology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, completing it in 1950. From 1950 to 1952, Roy rejoined the U.S. Army Medical Corps, managing frostbite treatment for soldiers evacuated from Korea and later running a dispensary in Ankara, Turkey. In 1953, Roy joined the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) in Oakland, where he became the chief of dermatology. He used Moh's surgical technique to remove cancers that were otherwise inoperable by conventional methods. He retired from KFHP in 1986 but continued to volunteer one day a week at the UC Medical Center's dermatology department until 1991, helping to establish the Lupus Clinic. Mr. Leeper had a profound love for his work, staff, and patients. His life was enriched by his passions for art, ballet, opera, and the symphony. Roy William Leeper, MD, passed away on March 26, 2006, at the age of 89.

    His father, Ernest Reasoner Leeper, was born in May of 1860 in Leesburg, Ohio and grew up in Orange, Ohio. On October 30, 1892 he married Jeanette Gibbs in Los Angeles, CA and the couple resided in San Bernardino, California where he worked for the rail road as a bridge inspector. He passed away on April 25, 1928 in Los Angeles, California. His parents, Roy's paternal grandparents, were William Alexander Leeper Jr (1828-1897) of Leesburg, Ohio and Margaret Masters (1838-1917) of Leesburg, Ohio. Roy's mother, Jeanette Gibbs, was born on March 17, 1873 in Ithaca, NY and grew up there. She later moved to California in the 1880's and married Ernest in 1892 in Los Angeles. She raised her family in San Bernardino, CA and passed away in Fontana, CA on April 4, 1965.

He was a medical student and listed Karl Frances King as his next of kin. He was described as having a sallow complexion, brown eyes, and standing 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 135 pounds. Roy was commissioned in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1943, serving in New Guinea and during the occupation of Japan before being discharged in 1946. He rejoined the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1950 to 1952, where he managed frostbite treatment for soldiers evacuated from Korea. In his final year of service, he ran a dispensary in Ankara, Turkey.

Hall were friends and companiosn for 53 years.

    Roy Leeper passed away March 26, 2006 at the age of 89. Roy was born on July 14, 1916 in San Bernardino, CA, the son of Ernest Leeper and Nettie Gibbs. He graduated from the University of California Los Angeles in 1938, attended medical school at University of California Berkeley and graduated in 1942. Roy was commissioned in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1943 and served in New Guinea and during the occupation of Japan. He was discharged in 1946. In 1947 he started his residency in dermatology at the Massachusetts General Hospital which he finished in 1950. He served again in the U.S. Army Medical Corps between 1950 and 1952. His assignment was management of frostbite for soldiers evacuated from Korea. During his final year he ran a dispensary in Ankara, Turkey. In 1953 he joined the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan in Oakland where he became chief of dermatology. He used Moh's surgical technique to remove cancers that were non-operable using conventional methods. He retired from KFHP in 1986. From 1953-1991 he volunteered one day a week to the dermatology department at the UC medical center, where he assisted in establishing the Lupis Clinic. He loved his work, his staff and his patients. Roy's life was filled with art, the ballet, the opera, and the symphony. He had a lifelong devotion to ceramics and photography, at both of which he excelled. Although he was never interested in selling his ceramics, you will find his pots in many homes throughout the Untied States and Europe. Anyone who was lucky enough to be one of his extraordinarily wide circle of friends found him to be a most giving, gentle and loving person. He will truly be missed. Roy is survived by Gaylord L. Hall, his friend and companion of 53 years and his nephews and nieces: James Leeper of Oakland, CA, Mary Catherine Grande of Castro Valley, CA, Jeannette O'Malley of Arcadia, CA John Leeper of Jamestown, NM, Lenore White of Arcadia, CA and Roberta Dewey of Pinon Hills, CA.
