The following obituary was in The Sudbury Star: RIVARD, Dwayne-Silvio Dr In loving memory of Dr. Dwayne Silvio Rivard, 30 years, who passed away Saturday, January 22nd, 2000 at Escanaba, Michigan. Born in Sudbury, Dwayne was raised and Educated here, graduating from Laurentian University with a Masters of Science. He went on to receive his Podiatrics degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Services in Des Moines, Iowa. After completing his residency at St. John McComb Center in Detroit he had recently opened an office with his wife and two associates in Escanaba called the U.P. Podiatry Associates. Dwayne had a great love of Basketball and always treasured his years as a member of the Laurentian Voyageurs. Dwayne was an important part of the Basketball family receiving the prestigious Voyageur Award for his many contributions to the program. Although the number of years in Dwayne's life had been unfairly shortened, his wonderful spirit and love will live on forever and prove the quotation that is quality not quantity that we should all strive for. Beloved husband of Dr. Maria (Aukee) Rivard of Escanaba. Beloved son of Richard and Liana (Floreani) Rivard of Sudbury. Loving brother of Paula (husband Tom Morel) and Kristina (special friend Darryll Gobbo) both of Sudbury. Dear grandson of the late Sylvio (predeceased 1969) and Teresina Floreani of Coniston, the late Alex (predeceased 1986) and Virginia Rivard of Coniston. Dear son-in-law of Dr. Robert and Kris Aukee of Ironwood, Michigan. Dear brother-in-law of Franz and Lisa Aukee of Ironwood, Michigan. He will be sadly missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Resting at the JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME, 233 Larch St. Funeral Mass in St. Andrew's the Apostle Church, 1250 Barrydowne Rd., Saturday, January 29th, 2000 at 11 a.m. Interment in the Civic Cemetery. Donations to the Dwayne Rivard Bursary would be appreciated. (Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday or 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. Friday)

In 1969, in the year that Dwayne S Rivard was born, on July 20th, the first men walked on the moon. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil A. Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. both walked on the moon but it was Armstrong who first stepped on the moon. They fulfilled the promise of President Kennedy's commitment in 1961 to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade.

In 1973, when he was merely 4 years old, on January 28th, the Paris Peace Accord was signed - supposedly ending the Vietnam War. Hostilities continued between North and South Vietnam and the U.S. continued to bomb. But by August 15, 1973, 95% of American troops had left Vietnam. The war ended in 1975 with the fall of Saigon.

In 1983, Dwayne was just 14 years old when "crack" cocaine was developed in the Bahamas and spread to the United States. Previously, cocaine had been cut with other substances, diluting it. Crack was 80% pure and therefore was more addictive. It was also cheaper, making it more easily available to low income neighborhoods.

In 1984, by the time he was just 15 years old, due to outrage about "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (it seemed too "dark" to many and it was rated PG), a new rating was devised - PG-13. The first film rated PG-13 was "Red Dawn".

In 1999, by the time he was 30 years old, on January 1st, the Euro became the new official single currency of the eurozone. It was used by Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain and has since spread in use. Daily, over 337 million Europeans use the euro.
