He had siblings John W Mathis, Mary Lee Winston, and Mazerline Madison. He married Essie Elizabeth (Dooley) Mathis in December 1957, and they were married until Earl's death on January 21, 2005 in Belton, Anderson County. He had children Earl F Mathis Jr and Kathye DeAnn (Mathis) Toms. Earl Mathis was buried on January 31, 2005 at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery Zion St, in Belton, Anderson County.
