Earl F. Slick, 86, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was buried in a private ceremony Tuesday, May 15, 2007. He was born in Clarion, Pa., the son of Tom Baker Slick and Bernice Frates Slick Urschel and grew up in Oklahoma City, Okla. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he founded Slick Airways, the first nationwide air freight business. He and his brother also pursued their father' s groundbreaking business in oil exploration and discovery. Mr. Slick and his wife, Jane, moved to Winston-Salem in 1952 from San Antonio, Texas. Whenever asked his profession, he would jokingly reply, "dog trainer"; however, he did enjoy a varied business career including investments in broadcasting, aircraft operations, hospitality, ranching and real estate. He served as a member of the Winston-Salem Planning Board and on the boards of a number of local charitable organizations including Old Salem, Summit School and N.C. Baptist Hospital. Together with his brother and sister, he was also very active in support of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio. He, with his family, endowed the Slick Family Foundation as a surviving legacy of his philanthropy. He enjoyed reading, travel, tennis, outdoor activities, good food and, of course, his dogs. His loyal friend, Buddy, will miss him. He had a great love for the outdoors. He enjoyed riding horses, fishing and hunting, particularly the elusive quail in Georgia and fast-flying ducks on North Carolina' s Outer Banks. It was this love which inspired his support for conservation efforts. Mr. Slick is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jane; his daughter, Phyllis S. Cowell, of Rocky Mount; his granddaughter, Lynn C. Ives, and husband Allen of Rocky Mount; his grandson, John F. Cowell, and wife Michelle of Raleigh; his great-grandchildren, George and Jane Ives and Maile Cowell; and a number of nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers or condolence calls, the family requests that memorials be directed to Old Salem, 600 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; Southwestern Foundation for Biomedical Research, P.O. Box 760549, San Antonio, TX 78245; or a charity of the donor' s choice. - Published in Winston-Salem Journal on May 19, 2007ADVERTISEMENT BYLooking for more information?
