  • Introduction

    US Congressman, Mayor of Dallas, Texas. Born on a farm in Dallas County, Texas, he attended Texas A & M University and Southern Methodist University in the 1920s, then with his brothers 1932, organized the Cabell's Corporation, a line of dairies and convenience stores, which he served as chairman of the board. In May 1961, he was elected as Mayor of Dallas and was in office at the time of the President John F. Kennedy's assassination. He resigned as Mayor of Dallas on February 3, 1964, when he was nominated as a candidate for Congress and was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-ninth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1965-73). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he retired and returned to Dallas, Texas, where he lived until his death at age 68.
