Ernest’s family were of German ancestry. His mother, Meta Emily Vibrock Creppon lived with him until her death; she only spoke German and Ernest was bilingual. Ernest supported his mother and three sisters (older sister, Ruby, and twin sisters Jessie Lee and Gussie Lee). Ernest spoke of a distant make relative immigrating from Germany to the U.S. in a flour barrel. During the Great Depression, Ernest and his brother-in-law, Bud Clower, supported their families by working in Saudi Arabia installing electrical lines through the desert. Ernest was a kind, honorable, hard-working, and loving man whom I was proud to call my grandfather. After graduating from Baylor in 1985, while attending grad school at UTA, I helped care for him until his death in 1989 from Alzheimer’s Disease. From what I understand, the Creppons fled Germany to France at one point, and changed the spelling of the name several times, so there is some French ancestry intermingled with the German; however, it is apparent via the language, marital history, customs, cuisine, etc., that the German lineage and ethnicity was preserved. Ernest had dark brown eyes and brown hair. He was highly intelligent, extremely industrious, and thrifty but generous. He was an excellent fisherman, hunter, and master gardener and was highly skilled in multiple areas of building tradesmen carpentry, plumbing and mechanics and was a master electrician. Ernest built the second of his beautiful family homes single-handedly, as well as a miniature house/ “playhouse” for the grandchildren which had electricity, plumbing and running water. He was a kind, gentle, funny giant-handed man whom all the children loved, trusted and could depend on. He taught us to live off of God’s bountiful land, to serve as good Christians, to love actively, work hard, have fun, be resourceful, knowledge-seeking and adaptable in order to make the most of the life and gifts God gave us. He will live in through his family, stories, and the wonderful memories he gave us.
