In 1816, in the year that Edgar Mickelson was born, in July, Lord Byron, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Polidori were vacationing in Switzerland, talking about the occult. They challenged each other to write the best horror story they could. Mary (Godwin) Shelley wrote "Frankenstein" - which came to her in a dream. Polidori wrote the short story The Vampyre.

In 1825, by the time he was only 9 years old, on August 18th, the Panic of 1825 began in London and spread to Europe, Latin America, and the United States. It affected Great Britain most strongly, leading to the closing of six banks in London and 60 banks in the country. Scottish adventurer - and trickster - Gregor MacGregor had invented a fictional Latin American country called Poyais and persuaded others to invest in the "country". The loss of funds on the part of banks and others began the panic.
