Edith Eveline (Bateman) Hebard of Mentone, City of Kingston County, VIC Australia was born in 1896 in Melbourne to Arthur Charles Bateman and Edith Catherine Mansell. She had siblings Carrie Lillian Bateman, Violet Dorothy Bateman, Arthur Edward Bateman, and Charles Hamilton Bateman. She married Frederick William Hebard, and had a child David Gordon Hebard. Edith Hebard died at age 68 years old on August 28, 1965 in Mentone.

In 1896, in the year that Edith Eveline Bateman Hebard was born, in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.

The company that he worked for needed to find a way to control humidity and by solving this problem, Carrier created a system that could be used for cooling the rooms of a house.
