    Edward Brewster Dittmer, died October 30, 2010 at the age of 93. He was born in 1917 in Bogalusa, and attended Bogalusa High School and Louisiana State University. As a teenager, Mr. Dittmer especially enjoyed spending time outdoors with his Scout Cavalry troop led by Sergeant Oliver Hartford. The troop, associated with the 108th Cavalry Unit Louisiana National Guard, practiced and perfected riding maneuvers on horseback. At LSU, he was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity and the LSU Army ROTC Scabbard and Blade. He graduated from LSU in 1938. In WWII Mr. Dittmer served as Captain in the 82nd Airborne Division, 155th Airborne Antiaircraft Battalion. Captain Dittmer fought in the Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Central Europe, Ardennes, and Rhineland campaigns and was awarded six bronze stars for meritorious service. After the war, he returned home and married Myrtle Mae Engerran in 1946. He worked at the Bogalusa paper mill his entire career, retiring in 1980 as Supervisor of Employee Benefits. After Myrt died in 1993, he married Mary Strain in 1996, and their combined families include 10 children and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was active in civic affairs, including the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. He served as President of Zellco Credit Union for 25 years. He was active in Annunciation Church, serving on the Finance Committee, as Eucharistic Minister and as Lector for many years. He was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Mr. Dittmer had many interests over his long lifetime. He loved to read and had a prodigious vocabulary. His knowledge of historical and literary fact was encyclopedic. He wrote poetry and enjoyed photography as a hobby. And, he was the epitome of sartorial elegance. He will be sadly missed. He is survived by his wife, Mary Strain Dittmer; his son Ted Dittmer, daughter-in-law Judge Dawn Amacker, and granddaughter Sasha; his son Larry Dittmer; his daughter Debbie Vial, son-in-law David Vial and grandchildren David and Donna Schmidt Vial, Jenna and Brad Bellina, and Colin and Shonti Privette Vial; his daughter Dottie Kenda, son-in-law John Kenda and grandchildren John Paul Kenda III and Claire Kenda; his daughter Dona Muscarello and son-in-law Frank Muscarello and his children Marc and Gina; his niece Janis Goss Leikam and Wayne Leikam; his nephew John Goss and Genevieve Goss, and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Lawrence Dittmer and Marguerite Emelia Brewster Dittmer and his only sister Dottie Dittmer Goss and her husband Jay Goss. Visitation will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home, 216 Alabama Avenue, Bogalusa, on Monday, November 1, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until time for the funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at Annunciation Church. Interment will follow at Ponemah Cemetery. Pallbearers are David Vial II, Colin Vial, John Paul Kenda, Brad Bellina, Barry Marx, and Jimmy Strain.
