Edward Heathcote Culph of Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born in 1897 in Oxley, Wangaratta Rural City County to Charles Culph and Mary Jane Harrison Culph. Edward Culph had siblings Evelyn Culph, Thomas Wilson Culph, Henry John Culph, Georgina Elizabeth Culph, Mary Kathleen Culph, Ethel Culph, Ernest Charles Culph, Violet Isabel Culph, George William Culph, Henry John Culph, and Thomas Wilson Culph. He married Gladys Louisa McKeown in 1921. He married Margaret Stewart White in 1936. Edward Culph died at age 88 years old on June 17, 1986 in Fitzroy, City of Yarra County.

In 1897, in the year that Edward Heathcote Culph was born, in the January 22nd issue of "Engineering", the word "computer" was first used to refer to a mechanical calculation device. Previously - since the 17th century - the term computer meant "one who computes" and referred to human beings who worked with numbers.

In 1907, Edward was merely 10 years old when the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
