In 1857, in the year that Edward Lauhoff was born, on March 4th, James Buchanan became the 15th President of the United States. Called a "doughface" by many - a Northerner with Southern sympathies - he said that he would only serve one term and he did what he said.

In 1887, he was 30 years old when on January 20th, the US Senate gave the US Navy the right to lease Pearl Harbor as a naval base. Pearl Harbor is on the island of Oahu, a part of the Hawaiian Islands. The Navy was given direction to maintain "a coaling and repair station" at the harbor.
