Introduction

Edward was my step brother. He was 18 years older than me and I was his father's second family of six. Edward had one sister Edward looked exactly like my father and was quite an eloquent letter writer. We did not see each other much but did keep in touch.

Died March 15, 2003 at Countrybrook Living Center. Born Salem, Mass on Feb 22, 1924 to Gordon Hambrecht and Ebba Hambrecht. He was retired as a manager for Walgreen's. He was a member of the Episcopal faith. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Proceeding him in death were his prents. Survivors are his wife, Marion Owen Hambrecht of Union Church; his sons, Michael Hambrecht of Orange Park, Fla., Stephen Hambrecht of Virginia, and Richard Hulburt of Clearwater, Fla.; His daughters, Cheryl Hough and Pamela Searcy, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; Patricia Pacquin of Fernandina Beach, Fla, and Lynn Cupit of Union Church and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with three step brothers and three step sister.

In 1924, in the year that Edward Oscar Hambrecht was born, J. Edgar Hoover, at the age of 29, was appointed the sixth director of the Bureau of Investigation by Calvin Coolidge (which later became the Federal Bureau of Investigation). The Bureau had approximately 650 employees, including 441 Special Agents. A former employee of the Justice Department, Hoover accepted his new position on the proviso that the bureau was to be completely divorced from politics and that the director report only to the attorney general.

In 1933, by the time he was just 9 years old, the day after being inaugurated, the new President, Franklin Roosevelt, declared a four-day bank holiday to stop people from withdrawing their money from shaky banks (the bank run). Within 5 days of his administration, the Emergency Banking Act was passed - reorganizing banks and closing insolvent ones. In his first 100 days, he asked Congress to repeal Prohibition (which they did), signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, signed legislation that paid commodity farmers to leave their fields fallow, thus ending surpluses and boosting prices, signed a bill that gave workers the right to unionize and bargain collectively for higher wages and better working conditions as well as suspending some antitrust laws and establishing a federally funded Public Works Administration, and won passage of 12 other major laws that helped the economy.
