In 1830, in the year that Edward Payson Terhune was born, on May 28th, the US Congress passed the Indian Removal Act. The Act authorized the President to negotiate with Native Americans in the southern region of the US, exchanging their ancestral lands for federal territory west of the Mississippi River. Tens of thousands of Native Americans were forced to move - and march - west.

In 1842, when he was merely 12 years old, in January, William E. Clarke - a medical student at Berkshire Medical College - became the first person to use an inhaled anesthetic. He administered the anesthetic to pull a tooth.

In 1879, Edward was 49 years old when on October 22nd, Thomas Edison tested the first practical electric light bulb. Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.

In 1893, Edward was 63 years old when on May 5th, a crash on the New York Stock Exchange started a depression that lasted 4 years. It was the beginning of the Panic of 1893.

In 1907, in the year of Edward Payson Terhune's passing, the second Hague peace conference was called by Russia in the Netherlands. While nothing was settled regarding the matter of peace among nations, many resolutions were passed (and accepted by many nations) about the conventions of war - especially the protection of noncombatants.
