He married Susan Mayo (Tweedie) Peterson in 1908, and had children Eileen Jennie Peterson, Estelle Mary Peterson, David Mathew John Peterson, Ada Ellen Peterson, Edward Charles Peterson, Joseph Edward Anzac Peterson, and Doreen Sarah Peterson. Edward Peterson died at age 51 years old on December 22, 1937 in Caulfield.

In 1886, in the year that Edward Samuel Peterson was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1892, at the age of merely 6 years old, Edward was alive when on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.
