    Edward Theodore Chaney was born to Robert Chaney and Maggie Maude Chaney and had siblings Vernon Carl Chaney, Robert Arthur CHaney, and Felmers O Chaney. Edward was 29 and married to Hortence Loraine Chaney when he registered for the World War 2 draft on October 16th 1940 in Miilwaukee Wisconsin. He worked at J. R. Griffin Coush Company at the time.

In 1911, in the year that Edward T Chaney was born, the United States Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in May. John D. Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.

In 1948, Edward was 37 years old when on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
