  • Introduction

    Edward Wake was born in 1919. He attended Taunton School. In 1938 he went to the Far East, and was taken prisoner by the Japanese, returning to the UK in 1945. Edward (Ted) married Margaret Lynes in 1947. Margaret had one daughter Elizabeth from a former marriage, (to Flying Officer J.W.Lynes who was killed in 1942). Ted and Margaret had no children of their own. Ted died in 1987 and was buried at West Hendred Parish Church.

In 1919, in the year that Edward Wake was born, in January, Nebraska was the 36th state to ratify the 18th Amendment, making it the law of the land. The 18th Amendment established Prohibition - a law against the production, transport, and sale of alcohol. Private consumption and possession were not prohibited. Several months later, the Volstead Act was passed, creating laws to enforce the Amendment. Bootlegging and bathtub gin followed.

In 1937, at the age of 18 years old, Edward was alive when on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
