Edward William Locke of Melbourne, St Francis Melbourne Parish County Australia was born in 1852 in Geelong to Edward Frederick Locke and Fanny (Davison) Locke. He had siblings Mary Ann (Locke) Bunting, Samuel Locke, Emma Locke, Frances Locke, Elizabeth Locke, Alice Hurring, Rhoda Whiting, Peter Lock, Frederick Locke, Job Locke, and George Henry Locke. He married Mary Cameron Locke in 1875, and had children Alexander William Locke, Samuel Ernest Locke, John Albert Locke, Emily Agnes Locke, Mary Ann Locke, Frances Locke, Frederick Anthony Andrew Locke, George Duncan Locke, and Catherine Fran Locke. Edward Locke died at age 81 years old on September 11, 1934 at Geelong Greater Geelong City, Victoria, Australia in Geelong, Greater Geelong City County, VIC, and was buried at Geelong Eastern Cemetery Ormond Rd, in East Geelong.

In 1852, in the year that Edward William Locke was born, on March 2nd, an experimental steam fire engine was tested in the US. Great Britain had begun using "steam pumpers" after 1829, when they were invented.

In 1865, at the age of only 13 years old, Edward was alive when on September 26th, Champ Ferguson, a Confederate guerrilla, became the first person to be convicted of war crimes arising from the Civil War. (There was only one other person convicted of war crimes in the Civil War.) He was found guilty by a U.S. Army tribunal on 23 charges arising from the murder of 53 people. On October 20, he was hung.
