Edwin Hayball of Brighton Australia was born in 1843 to Robert Hayball and Eliza Thompson Hayball. He had siblings Elizabeth Hayball, Charlotte Hayball, Fredrick Henry Hayball, Robert Hayball, Mary Hayball, Alice Amelia Hayball, Alfred Harry Hayball, William Hayball, and Herbert Walter Hayball. He was in a relationship with Elizabeth Ryan (Roe) Hayball, and had a child Edith Margaret (Hayball) Brattstrom. Edwin Hayball died at age 65 years old in 1908 in Brighton.

In 1857, by the time he was merely 14 years old, on March 2nd, the largest slave auction in US history was begun. Called "The Weeping Time", the auction lasted 2 days. Slave owner Pierce M. Butler - who had inherited the slaves 20 years before but was now deeply in debt - sold 436 men, women, children, and infants, all of whom were kept in stalls at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. The people were held for weeks before the auction in the horse stalls.
