Elaine Lovill's History: 1918 - 1998

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Elaine was born in Illinois near Chicago to Polish immigrants, Anna and (Frank?). There is an Anna Gracyas that passed away in Cook County in 1933 that could possibly be her mother. She described her mother as always appearing “sad”. Elaine had a crucifix from her casket and some scarves that Anna wore on her way to America from Poland. Elaine’s father came to America first to save up money to bring Anna. Elaine had two brothers and one sister. One brother has been lost to history as he was shamed from the family for killing a police officer in Chicago. Her brother Henry she adored. Elaine didn’t talk about him much because he was lost and never came home following the war. She loved and looked up to her older sister, Jean. Jean married a wealthy Italian man named Henry Bartoli (Hank). Elaine lost her sister to cancer in 1981. Elaine married Clinton Lovill. He was adopted and family history for him is unknown. They had one daughter, Ada, and a stillborn son. Elaine claimed to her death that her son was not stillborn, she remembered him crying. It broke her heart and if he was alive, she always wondered what happened to him. Her husband was not a believer in Christ and that bothered her as she was Catholic. She hated pictures of herself, always pointing out how fat and ugly she thought she was, so I never got to really see any old pictures of her. Her daughter had her first son, David Stewart, in 1961. Elaine loved him so much and became a primary caretaker along with his paternal grandmother Thomas. Ada had another son, Jonathan, a few years later. The father died in a car accident before Jonathan was born. Ada went on to marry John “Bill” Stewart, son of Kathryn Nifong and John Stewart, from Modesto, Illinois. Elaine had her first great granddaughter in 1983, followed by 4 more great grandchildren. She resided in Indianapolis. Her daughter Ada passed away following a car accident in 1995. Due to declining health, she moved from Indianapolis to Bloomfield. She stayed with her grandson David and their 5 children. She was able to get a small condo close to the home and lived very independently. She suffered from COPD for many years and was on oxygen. She loved her family dearly. She had lived a extraordinary life, although I think she would say it was only an ordinary life. She had a lot of stories. Some sad. Her stories shared many life lessons that she passed down. I miss you Ma, be with me always.
