Eli Johnsdatter Sæther was born in 1821 at Håkon Sæther in Sunndal County, Møre Og Romsdal Norway to John Jacobsen Sather and Randi Estensdatter (Skrondal) Saether, and had siblings Gyro Johnsdatter (Saether) Bruseth, Jacob Johnsen Sæther, Marith Johnsdatter Dalsbø, Brit Johnsdatter Sæther, and Magnhild Johnsdatter Sæther. Eli Sæther died at age 75 years old in 1896 in Stangvik.

In 1821, in the year that Eli Johnsdatter Sæther was born, on July 10th, the United States took possession of the recently acquired territory of Florida from Spain. Spain could no longer afford to support the area so, through a treaty, the US received East and West Florida. Future President Andrew Jackson briefly served as governor of the territory.

In 1837, at the age of 16 years old, Eli was alive when on February 25th, in Philadelphia, the Institute for Colored Youth (ICY) - the oldest African-American university in the United States - was founded. It was the first institution for the higher education of black people in the United States. Founded by Quaker Richard Humphreys who gave $10,000 to establish the school, it still exists today - although the location has moved and it has been renamed Cheyney University. Humphreys was concerned about the struggles of free African Americans to make a living.
