Refresh this page to see various historical events that occurred during Eliza's lifetime.

In 1848, in the year that Eliza Jane (Harmison) Deel was born, on May 29th, Wisconsin became the 30th U.S. state. The British had formerly owned the territory but after the War of 1812, American white settlers - especially lead miners - moved into the area.

In 1856, she was just 8 years old when on May 21st, Lawrence Kansas was ransacked and burned by pro-slavery forces. Called the "Sacking of Lawrence", it was part of the "Bleeding Kansas" war between pro-slavery and antislavery settlers.

In 1865, by the time she was 17 years old, on July 5th, the U.S. Secret Service was created. The first duty of the Secret Service was investigating counterfeit money. Duties soon expanded to murder, bank robbery, and illegal gambling - and, after the assassination of President McKinley in 1901, presidential protection.

In 1885, by the time she was 37 years old, on June 17th, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor. Two hundred thousand people and hundreds of boats greeted the statue. It had to be assembled but that had to wait until the pedestal was completed the following April.

In 1918, in the year of Eliza Jane (Harmison) Deel's passing, in January, President Wilson presented his Fourteen Points, which assured citizens that World War I was being fought for a moral cause and outlined a plan for postwar peace in Europe. The only leader of the Allies to present such a plan, the Europeans thought Wilson was being too idealistic. The points included free trade, open agreements, democracy and self-determination. They were based on the research and suggestions of 150 advisors.
