She was married to Robert James Sands in 1856, and had children Emma Susan (Sands) Stent, William Sands, Louisa Sands Fairweather, Robert James Sands, Alfred William Sands, Charles William Sands, Elizabeth Jane Sands, Walter Frederick Sands, Maude Ethel Eleanor Sands, and Rosetta Sands. Elizabeth Sands died at age 47 years old on October 16, 1886 at 61 Wellington St, in Hong Kong Island Hong Kong.

In 1838, in the year that Elizabeth Abble Purton Hibble Sands was born, on February 24th, Representatives William J. Graves (Kentucky) and Jonathan Cilley (Maine) fought a duel with rifles. They faced off at 94 yards. Cilley was hit on Graves' third try - in the femoral artery - and bled to death on the dueling field. The Panic of 1837 and Jackson's presidency had caused an extremely partisan Congress and the duel was a result.
