  • Obituary

Elizabeth Smith Obituary SMITH, ELIZABETH (BETTY) ANNE LOBECK, "La Vieja de la Bicicleta", 89, of Miami since 1923. Her husband Arthur P. Smith, "Father of the Planetarium" prede-ceased her. Mother of Carolyn Anne, Donald Lee, David Alan, Betsy Jeanne, Paul Van Wart, Winifred Evans, Roger Nutt and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She attended Shenandoah Junior High. Miami Senior High, Wellesley College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to Sigma Xi, a national honorary scientific society. She received her Masters from Smith College for work on protozoan parasites. She went on to study for her doctorate at Yale for her thesis published in scientific journals based on three species of amoebae that she discovered and named. Mother, neigh- bor, friend , teacher and benefactor to all whose life she touched. As one of the original Branch Counselors of the Miami News, her news boys learned responsibility and honesty; the two to four year old children at St. Stephens and Holy Comforter Episcopal churches were taught that God is good; her neighbors relied on her to handle their finances; her roofer and insurance adjuster found she could climb a ladder up three stories better than they, ... and her children... her last lesson in her last days..."Man thinks he is so smart. From the time you are a child you learn and you learn... then it turns out God already knew it all." A memorial service will be held by Father John Stanton at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on North Bayshore Drive, Saturday, July 22, at 3:00 PM. Betty would appreciate just your prayers, or a donation to the charity of your choice or to Trinity Cathedral. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.herald.com/obituaries.
