Ella Winifred (Houston) Hocking of Corryong Australia was born in 1898 in Corryong, Towong Shire County, VIC to Samuel Houston and Matda Lawrence Houston. She had a sister Mary Houston. She married Frank Noel Rayment Hocking in 1922, and had children Norman Frank Hocking and Margery Winnifred Hocking. Ella Hocking died at age 86 years old on February 13, 1985 in Ivanhoe, City of Banyule County.

In 1898, in the year that Ella Winifred Houston was born, on March 24th, Robert Allison of Pennsylvania became the first person to buy an American-built car. He bought a Winton, which he had seen in an advertisement in Scientific American. The Winton, built in Ohio, was made by hand and came with a leather roof, padded seats, gas lamps, and tires made by B.F. Goodrich.
