Ellen Constance Popple of Adra Australia was born in 1887 to Frederick Popple and Isabella Beard Kidd. She had siblings Ada Annie Popple, Mary Jane Popple, Arthur Popple, Isabella Gertrude Popple, Ethel May Popple, George Frederick Popple, Blanche Eveline Popple, and Helen Constance Popple. Ellen Popple died at age 16 years old in 1903 in Adra.

In 1887, in the year that Ellen Constance Popple was born, on January 28th, the largest recorded snowflakes fell in a snowstorm in Fort Keogh, Montana. They were supposed to have been 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick. A rancher in the area said that they were “larger than milk pans”. A Wild West tall tale? Not according to the Guinness World Records book.

In 1890, when she was merely 3 years old, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.
