At the age of 35, Elmer registered for the WWII draft on October 16, 1940, in Spanish Fork, Utah, USA. He was self-employed and the head of the household at the time of his registration. Elmer enlisted in the US Army on April 6, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, as a Private in the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component of the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA. He served in the Army for three years and four months until his honorable discharge on August 5, 1945. Elmer was married three times in his life. He first married Dorothy Elizabeth (Dolly) Dodds (1902–1973) in 1923 in Eureka, Juab, Utah, USA, and the couple lived in Sheridan, Wyoming, USA. They later divorced. He then married Kathleen Isbell (1907–1994) in 1950 in Sevier County, Utah, USA. Lastly, he married Leva Sadie Brewer (1906–1988) in Sevier County, Utah, USA, and they had a daughter named Lois Lavon Eisenberg (1931-2013).
