She was a very nice person to work with and she was very determined to do her job as a bookkeeper and financial adviser to her boss, Floyd A Turner, who was the owner of Brewer Jewelry Co., Inc. in Suffolk VA. She worked at that store for over 40 yrs. and was there to celebrate the store's 100th anniversary! Elmira loved children although she never married or had children of her own, but was always excited whenever an employee of the co. had a newborn! She had a brother, Lawrence Brewer, who died years before her death. He had an only child, we called "Larry", which I'm sure was for Lawrence. Larry was married and had a son and daughter and he was in the military stationed in various places but he always found time to get home to see his parents and his dear aunt!
I worked with Elmira for almost 15 yrs. in the store as a clerk, secretary and appliance sales mgr. before leaving for another job about 10 yrs. before her death, but continued to keep in touch with her and her best friend, Tillie Johnson Smith, who was also employed at Brewer's and kept all of the billing of accounts for the business and using the outdated bookkeeping machine. They both attended Suffolk Christian Church and were always seen together--Tillie didn't drive so she depended on Elmira to get her to a lot of places, but many of us who worked there at the store would help Tillie get to her appts. etc. She was dearly loved too! I really miss both of them and their friendship even after all these years!
