    Elmo Sevester Vanhoutan was born on July 28, 1921 in Delmont, Charles Mix County, South Dakota. He was the son of Phillip Albert Vanhoutan (1885-1967) and Alice Ann Reedy (1889-1952). Elmo was one of 11 children with siblings including Nora Altie May VanHoutan (1908-1908), Elsie Ellen Vanhoutan (1910-1999), Grace Anna Vanhoutan (1913-1990), Joseph Edward VanHoutan (1916-1944), Josie Edna Vanhoutan (1916-1997), Guy William VanHoutan (1918-1988), Elmer Phillip Vanhoutan (1923-2016), Buddie VanHoutan (1925-1925), and Luther Eugene VanHoutan (1935-2019). He lived in Summit, Lake, South Dakota, USA and on March 23, 1940 he married Mary Troup (1920–2001) in Lake County, South Dakota, USA. The couple had a son and daughter Jean Vanhoutan (1941-2000) together and later divorced. He enlisted in the military on April 28, 1944. At the time of enlistment he held the rank of Private and resided in Moody, South Dakota. He enlisted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, with the service number 37594030. He was part of the Selectees group of enlisted men. Elmo's military service lasted from April 28, 1944, to June 14, 1947, when he received his discharge. In 1950, he re married to Melva M Nordyke (1924–) and they were married for for almost twenty years before divorcing in September of 1967. Elmo was later living in San Jose, Santa Clara, California, USA and married for a third time on January 20, 1977 in San Mateo, California to Ruth Ione Tucker (1913–1987). They were married until her passing in 1987 and two months after her death, Elmo Vanhoutan passed away on May 4, 1987.
