    Elroy Artis married Anna Bell Ray (1908 - 1997) in 1928. They had one son, Connie Lee Ray (1938 - 1999). Elroy reported that he was divorced in the 1940 census. On his 1942 World War II draft card, Elroy was described as being Black, 5 feet 11 inches tall, and as weighing 160 pounds. He had black eyes, black hair, and a "dark brown" complexion. He also had a "deep scar" on his left foot.

In 1902, in the year that Elroy Artis was born, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.
