generosity; Elvira Verdugo Brady was my mother;s (Hermelinda Niedes Verdugo Gutierrez Rendon Perez Grijalva) godmother. Elvira Brady was generous to my mother and to all of us children and when we had little food in the refrigerator in the 50's, 60's and 70's, Mother would take me to see Godmother Elvira Brady who grew her own fruits, vegetable, chickens, for both meat and eggs along with goats, and huge bullfrogs which she fixed in the French way. Nina Elvira, as my mother, Hermelinda N. V.. G. Rendon, Perez-Grijalva, told me, was Margarita Niedes Verdugo Gutierrez Rendon de Perez's mother's (Guadalupe Niedes Verdugo Gutierrez Rendon) mother's first cousin. Anotherwords, Elvira N. V. Brady and Margarita N. V. G. R. de Perez shared mother's who were sisters. Peter Brady and Elvira N. V. Brady bought many (perhaps 100 acres) on River Rd off Campbell perhaps in the late teens or 20's. Peter Brady, Sr. liked to hunt deer, elk, duck, quail and fish for trout up in the White Mountains, at first alone or with a friend, and later, with his son, Peter Brady, Jr. who is now, also, deceased. Hermelinda N. V. G. R. Perez-Grijalva, was born in Tucson, Arizona on June 21, 1923 at her maternal aunt's home which was located next door to where the Time Market stands today. Why? Because Margarita N. V. Gutierrez Rendon de Perez was born to Guadalupe Niedes Verdugo de Gutierrez Rendon on November 5, 1906 in Saric, Sonora, Mexico to Don Joaquin Gutierrez Rendon and Dona Guadalupe Niedes Verdugo de Gutierrez Rendon. Dona Guadalupe died in 1907 just eighteen months after my maternal grandmother, Margarita N. V. Gutierrez Rendon de Perez was born. Don Joaquin was devastated at the loss of his beloved wife, Dona Guadalupe and when Margarita became pregnant with my mother, Hermelinda, at age 17, he did not want his youngest daughter to die from childbirth complications as Saric, Sonora, Mexico was but a small village without a doctor and too far by buggy to get to a doctor in Magdalena or Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. So, he arranged for Margarita to go to her maternal aunt's home in Tucson, Arizona to have her first child, my mother, Hermelinda N. V. Gutierrez Rendon Perez de Grijalva. My mother drove me by the very spot where she was born in 1923. Elvira N. V. Brady took her responsibility of being Hermelinda's Godmother and kin very seriously and that is why Mother felt very comfortable going out to see Elvira Brady and ask for assistance in feeding her large brood of nine children: Ralph P. Grijalva, Veronica L. P. Grijalva, Cynthia G. Reffruschinni, Richard P. Grijalva, Louise Donna Villasenor, Sandra Belinda P. Grijalva, Rene P. Grijalva, Marrittza Lourdes P. Grijalva, and last, but not least, the child who looked most like our Mother, Hermelinda, Hermelinda Denise P. Grijalva. My mother had her first child on September 15, 1945 and her last child on April 17th or 18th, 1965, the year her older sister, Veronica Linda Perez Grijalva graduated from Tucson High School. Hermelinda N. V. G. R. Perez de Grijalva gave birth to Hermelinda D. P. Grijalva, Jr. on the same day her brother, Jesus N. V. G. R. de Perez was in a car accident as he and his wife Martha and his three children, Toni, Virgil and Cecelia were headed to Tucson, Arizona to spend Easter holiday with extended family. Jesus died in the accident and all of his family lay injured in the hospital. Mother was not told about the horrific accident that took her brother's life in April of 1965 as she was much too weak and fragile from giving birth to my sister, Hermelinda, Jr.
