TOWNSEND, Mrs, Elvira died March 11, 1870 of paralysis at the home of her son-in-law in West Elkton, age 102 years 4 days. Born in North Carolina, March 7, 1768 and moved to South Carolina when about 8 or 10. At the close of the Revolution she formed acquantiance with and married John Townsend,a soldier, May 6, 1783. Joined Friends.
In 1803 moved to Warren County, Ohio near where Waynesville now is and stayed a few years, moving to Wayne County, Indiana. staying until August 25, 1853 when her husband died. She then came to live with her son-in-law, Elisha and Elizabeth Stubbs in West Elkton. She retained her mental and physical faculties quite well until some 18 months ago when she had a light attack of paralysis She raised 12 children, all dead but 2. In the fall of 1815 or 1816, in company with others she rode horseback from Wayne County,Indiana to Mt. Pleasant Jefferson County 0hio., a distance of over 200 miles to attend Friends Yearly Meeting.

In 1807, she was 39 years old when on February 19th, former Vice President of the United States Aaron Burr was arrested on charges of treason, accused of plotting to grab parts of Louisiana and Mexico in order to create an independent republic. On September 1st, he was acquitted of the charges. Although he was deemed to be guilty of plotting against the U.S., he was not found to be guilty of an "overt act" - which is the Constitutional requirement to be met. Burr's reputation, after the charges and the duel with Alexander Hamilton, was ruined, however.
In 1819, Elvira was 51 years old when on January 2nd, the first major peacetime financial crisis in the United States began. Called The Panic of 1819, banks created a crisis when they began foreclosing on heavily mortgaged farms and businesses.
In 1832, when she was 64 years old, by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.
In 1866, she was 98 years old when on April 10th, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - the ASPCA - was created. New Yorker Henry Bergh was the first President of the Society and the leader in its creation. He later formed the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
In 1870, in the year of Elvira Cain-'s passing, on January 26th, the state of Virginia rejoined the Union. On February 23rd, Mississippi was readmitted to the Union. On March 30th, Texas was readmitted to the Union. And on July 15th, Georgia became the last Confederate state to be readmitted to the Union.
