OBITUARY - Plain Dealer, Wabash (IN) - April 1, 1940 PROMINENT DRUGGIST DIES SUDDENLY OF HEART ATTACK Double funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon for Emmanuel Gackenheimer, 77, prominent Wabash druggist, who died in his auto late Sunday afternoon while being rushed home following a heart attack at his pharmacy in downtown Wabash. Initial services will be conducted at 2 o'clock at the home followed by church services at 2:30 at the St. Matthew's Evangelical and Reformed church Rev. H.J. Weber pastor of the church will officiate and #burial will be in Falls cemetery. Mr.Gackenheimer who was one of the community's most highly respected businessmen had been in ailing health for the last few years but had been able to be at the store almost every day. Ill heath had forced him to give up active management of the store serveral years ago. His son, Paul took over the active management. The elderly druggist was born at Van Wert, O., Jan. 28, 1863 to Rev. John David and Elizabeth Gackenheimer. He spent his youth there and in Bippus where his father held his last pastorate. At both places the youth acted as organist for his father's church services and he taught German school at Bippus and at Van Wert. He became engaged in the pharmacy business early in his youth, working for a brother at Van Wert and later at the Weber drug store in Roann. In 1901 he came to Wabash and acquired his own drug store on the east side of the courthouse square. He was a progressive businessman as evidenced by the present Gackenheimer Pharmacy which has become one of the most modern, up-to-date pharmacies in northern Indiana. Mr. Gackenheimer was married July 17, 1912 to Emma Schmidt who survives together with four children, Paul, who now manages the store; Agnes and Mary Helen at home, and Robert, who is attending the Indianapolis College of Pharmacy. Mr. Gackenheimer was the last of his family. The decedent was a member of St. Matthew's Evangelical and Reformed church. The body was returned from the Hoover funeral home to the residence at 263 west Sinclair street Sunday night.
