Emily Ethel May (Fletcher) of Cobden, Corangamite Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1896 in Cobden to Thomas John Fletcher and Jessie Cairns (Spalding) Fletcher. She had siblings Lillias Charlotte Ada Fletcher, William Henry Fletcher, Violet Leura Eveline Fletcher, Harry Alfred Fletcher, Minnie Catherine Jane (Fletcher), and Mary Elizabeth Alice Fletcher. She married Charles James Brown in 1914, and had a child Reginald Frank Brown. Emily died at age 86 years old in 1982.

In 1896, in the year that Emily Ethel May Fletcher was born, on August 17th, the first pedestrian v car fatality occurred in Great Britain. Bridget Driscoll, age 44, was walking with her family on the grounds of The Crystal Palace in London when she was hit by a car driven by Arthur James Edsall. Edsall claimed to be going 4.5 mph and Driscoll's death was ruled an "accidental death" after an inquest.

In 1934, Emily was 38 years old when on November 11th 1933, an extremely strong dust storm hit South Dakota, stripping topsoil. Other strong dust storms had occurred during 1933. Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
