    EMMA D. HISEROTE Passed away July 8, 2002 in Alameda at the age of 88. Beloved wife of the late Willard F. Hiserote. She is survived by her daughter Margo Sanchez of San Lorenzo, CA, Michelle Alderman of Chula Vista, CA; sister to Ruben Ortez of Monte Vista, CO, Rudolph Ortez of Oakland, CA; Jane Toth of Westminister, CO, Virginia Lujan of San Lorenzo, CA, and Ralphie Lutrie of Denver, CO. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, including Kevin and Cristina Sanchez, and eleven great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial mass on Saturday,July 13, 2002 at 1:00 PM at St. Joseph Basilica, 1109 Chestnut St. , Alameda, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, or the American Diabetes Association.

In 1913, in the year that Emma D Hiserote was born, the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 total Filipino civilians died and although the U.S. viewed its role as a colonial presence as one of preparing the Philippines for independence, American colonization drastically changed the character off the culture. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.

In 1925, she was merely 12 years old when in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
