In 1928, she was 33 years old when aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.

In 1935, when she was 40 years old, on August 14, the Social Security Act was signed into law. The purpose was to "provide federal assistance to those unable to work".
