....and say, "Carmela, don't worry about what you modda say...I buy for you anything you want to eat."
He was also known to say, when there was a storm coming, "The sky...she going to break open and sob-a.". He also claimed we could avoid getting wet by running in between the raindrops in a serpentine pattern. You can imagine what the neighbors must have thought looking out the window and seeing this old man and this tiny ten year old girl zigzagging their way across the yard toward the house.

I also have a very fond memory of taking a trip with my mom and him into the north end of Boston, where he would go to the docks to meet up with merchants that he knew coming in from the old country, in order to get Muscatel grapes from Italy, which he would use to make the best homemade Muscat wine that I've ever had even to this day. Enrico Ponzini of Amesbury, MA, was my maternal grandfather. My most fond memory is of him sitting at the kitchen table in my parents' home playing a folk guitar and singing old Italian folk songs. He also had the most incredible and masterful garden which took up almost a full acre. You entered the garden at the far edge of his back yard through an arbor archway in the middle of a white painted lattice work wooden fence, which on one side of it had the most beautiful rose bushes growing along it and on the other, had the most delicious strawberries vining up through it. There was a narrow stone paver path going absolutely straight along through the center of it and as you walked along this center path, on either side were rows and rows and rows of vegetables. My grandfather's garden had probably the biggest influence on my life in regards to my appreciation and understanding of the importance of freshly grown organic food.
