Lionel was one of 4 children, Muriel, Cyril Lionel and Eric born to George Frederick and Elsie Harriet Hasshill who resided in the village of Rocester Staffordshire. Their mother died in 1930 when Lionel was 10 years old and his younger brother Eric only 7. Their father remarried in 1935 to Annie Ward who had a young son Arthur. Lionel was called up into the Army in 1939 at the outbreak of war and was killed on the morning of 8 July 1944 in the battle for Caen.
