In 1809, on December 30th, Boston Massachusetts banned the wearing of masks at balls. Boston was following many other places - including England - by banning masked balls, which were considered to contribute to loose morals. After all, with masks, you couldn't tell the class of the person or even their gender! The law was extended in 1849 and repealed in 1963.

In 1814, in August, the British captured Washington, DC and set fire to the White House and the Capitol building. President James Madison and his wife, Dolley, couldn't return to the White House when the British were driven out. It wasn't until 1817 that the White House became habitable again.
