  • Introduction

The Argus, Melbourne. 27th December 1910. - DEATH ON THE ROAD. COLLAPSE OVER BICYCLE. Ernest Bertram, a middle aged man, was found dead on the White Horse road, Mitcham, yesterday. His body was leaning over a bicycle, which was lying against a fence. Bertram had set out early yesterday morning on a fishing trip. It is thought that he was suddenly seized with faintness, and went to the fence for support. The matter has been reported to the coroner ( Dr. Cole ). The Geelong Advertiser. Victoria. 27th December 1910. SINGULAR ROADSIDE DEATH. A Fitzroy upholsterer named Ernest Bertram left home yesterday morning to go fishing in the Mitcham district. Late in the afternoon his body was found on the White Horse-road. His cycle was propped up against a fence, and he was leaning over it dead. Constable Kane found the body quite warm, and death had only occurred a few minutes before. The constable could find no traces of a struggle, and following the tracks of the bicycle for some distance , found where it had swerved from the road to the spot where the body was found. It is surmised that Bertram was overcome by a fainting fit, and rode to the fence for support.
