Ernest Wendt died at age 81 years old on March 24, 1951 in Herington, Dickinson Co County, KS, and was buried on March 27, 1951 at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Herington.

    Herington Times March 24, 1951 ERNEST WENDT Services Tuesday For Ernest Wendt. Retired Shoe Repairman Had Been Ill Several Years; Native of Germany; Was Buried at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Ernest F. Wendt, 19 N. E street of this city, passed away at his home Saturday evening March 24, 1951 at 6:00 following a lingering illness of several years duration. Coming to Herington before the opening of the century he opened a shoe repair business and continued until several years ago when his health failed and he retired to him home where he continued as long as his health would permit. A native of Germany he came to America when 15 years of age, in Oct 1884. On Nov 4, 1882 he applied for his citizenship papers and received them on Sept. 25, 1906. When he came to Herington in 1896 he became a member of the volunteer fire dept. in 1900 in which capacity he continued to serve the community until 1930 when he retired from the dept. and was rewarded a diamond set service pen from the city for his faithfulness. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 at the Donahue Funeral Home and at 2:30 at St. Paul's American Lutheran Church with Rev. A.H. Roesener officiating. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. George Mann, Mrs. Ray Wendlandt, George Schlesener and Robert Utech, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Michler at the organ. Their songs were: God will Take Care of You and O, Where Can the Home of the Soul be Found. Burial was in Sunset Hill Cemetery with John H. Bernhart, George Schlesener, L..A. Schesene, Ernest Domann, R.V. Dilpebrock and LeRoy Kahn serving as active pallbearers and H.A. Pagenkopf, Ray DeBus, August Wendlandt and V. Kingsbury serving as Honorary Pallbearers. A complete obituary will be found on page 3 Sec. A (which I did not copy).
