He married Florence Mabel Stancombe Aitken, and had a child Ronald Wilfred Aitken. Ernest Aitken died at age 66 years old on May 14, 1938 in Prahran, City of Stonnington County.

In 1871, in the year that Ernest Henry Aitken was born, on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.

In 1884, at the age of merely 13 years old, Ernest was alive when on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.
