Ernest Joseph Bercgeay was born circa 1957 to Virgil J. Bercgeay and Audrey (LeBourgeois) Bercgeay, and had siblings Mary "Patty" (Bercgeay) Alford, Tammy (Bercgeay) Blanchard, Jimmy Bercgeay, Wayne Bercgeay, and Rodney Bercgeay. He married Mona (Sanchez) Bercgeay, and had children Virgie (Bercgeay) Montz and Jared "Boo" Bercgeay. Ernest Bercgeay died at age 55 years old on March 20, 2013.

    A resident of St. Amant and retired Maintenance Supervisor with the Ascension Parish School Board, he passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at the Hospice of Baton Rouge Butterfly Wing. He was 56. Visiting will be at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 5pm to 9pm. Visiting will resume on Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, St. Amant from 9 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Entombment will follow in the church mausoleum. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mona Sanchez Bercegeay; father and stepmother, Virgil J. and Ruby Bercegeay; daughter, Virgie Montz and husband, Ryan; son, Jared "Boo" Bercegeay and wife, Katie; two sisters, Mary "Patty" Alford and husband, Danny, and Tammy Blanchard and husband, Numa; three brothers, Jimmy Bercegeay and friend, Cindy, Wayne Bercegeay and wife, Cindy, and Rodney Bercegeay and wife, JoAnn; four grandchildren, Kole Baker, Audrey Bercegeay, Gavin and Mason Montz; mother in law, Margaret Sanchez; two sisters in law, Monica Boudreaux and husband, Gary, and Tammy Charbonnet and husband Jimmy. He was preceded in death by his mother, Audrey LeBourgeois Bercegeay; sister, Baby Bercegeay; father in law, Virgen Sanchez; mother in law, Dorothy Moody; and two sisters in law, Darla Landry and Lori Childers. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and never missed an opportunity to be outdoors. In 1957, in the year that Ernest Joseph "Ernie" Bercgeay was born, on September 24th, the "Little Rock Nine" (nine African-American students) entered Little Rock High School. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had previously prevented the students from entering the school at the beginning of the term with the Arkansas National Guard - they blocked the door. President Eisenhower ordered federal troops - the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army - to guard the students and allow them entry.

In 1960, by the time he was just 3 years old, on May 1st, an American CIA U-2 spy plane, piloted by Francis Gary Powers, was shot down by a surface-to-air missile over the Soviet Union. Powers ejected and survived but was captured. The U.S. claimed that the U-2 was a "weather plane" but Powers was convicted in the Soviet Union of espionage. He was released in 1962 after 1 year, 9 months and 10 days in prison.
