Ernest Joseph Gregoire Jr. was born on March 17, 1942 in Binghamton, Broome County, New York United States to Ernest Joseph Gregoire Sr. and Alma Margaret Gregoire, and has siblings Lucille Stella Koba, Marguerite Ann Svoboda, Ronald Paul Gregoire, Ann Marie DeGroat, Patricia Alma Stefanski, Harold Gary Gregoire, and Richard Edward Gregoire. He married Marcia Catherine Gregoire in 1965 in Binghamton, Broome County, and they were married until Marcia's death on January 13, 2003 in Roaring Brook Township, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. Ernest Gregoire has children Matthew David Gregoire, Jacqueline Marie Castellani, and Paul William Gregoire.

In 1942, in the year that Ernest Joseph Gregoire Jr. was born, due to World War II, automobile production in the United States was stopped on February 1st. A tire rationing program had begun the month before. Detroit - the main hub of car manufacturing - was ordered to free up assembly lines for military production. The president of the Automobile Manufacturers Association said “The automotive industry is in this war all the way". Some dealerships had to close and others expanded their repair shops. The used car market boomed (as did a black market in used cars).
