Ernest Julius Gerlach of Emer Australia was born in 1886 to Louisa (Mihan) Gerlach and Johann Julius Gerlach. He had siblings Hilda Louisa Gerlach, Alma Isabella Gerlach, Malviena Terhesa Pau Gerlach, Alfred Frederick Gerlach, and Herbert Edward Gerlach. Ernest Gerlach died at age 88 years old in 1974 in Emer.

In 1886, in the year that Ernest Julius Gerlach was born, on October 28th, President Grover Cleveland officially dedicated the Statue of Liberty. A gift from France, the base for the statue had been built using donations from the American public. The unplanned but enthusiastic celebration after the dedication led to the first ticker tape parade.

In 1892, when he was only 6 years old, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.
