He had siblings Charlotte Jane Cougle, George Henry Cougle, Francis Ellen Cougle, Mary Anne Cougle, Caroline Cougle, Arthur John Cougle, Walter Symons Cougle, William Henry Cougle, Edwin Cougle, Gertrude Alice Cougle, Amy Harriet Cougle, and Frank Gilford Cougle. He married Annie Martha George, and had children Geoffrey Ernest, Eunice Annie, and John Bruce. Ernest Cougle died at age 75 years old in 1951 in Murrumbeena.

In 1876, in the year that Ernest Thomas Cougle was born, on February 14th, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. So did Elisha Gray. A month later, on March 7th, Bell was granted the patent and on the 10th, he made his first successful telephone call - in which he said: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you."
