    Fannie Ernestine Porter Norfolk was born Fannie Ernestine Porter on May 27, 1912. She was the oldest daughter of Henry Langston Porter and Elizabeth Iola Short Porter. Mrs. Norfolk graduated from Woodstock High School in 1930. She later attended Tennessee A&I State and Lane College where she received a Bachelor Degree. Mrs. Norfolk worked as a school teacher in the segregated school system in Tipton County for 35 years. She also owned a cosmetology business for 17 years. She married Robert Lee Norfolk, Sr., a World War II veteran, in 1946.

In 1912, in the year that Ernestine P Norfolk was born, in October, former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot, but not killed, while campaigning for another term as President with the newly created Bull Moose (Progressive) Party. John Schrank was a Bavarian-born saloon-keeper from New York who had been stalking Roosevelt when he shot him just before a campaign speech. Shot in the chest (and showing the audience his bloody shirt), Roosevelt went on to give a 55 to 90 minute talk (reports vary on the length) before being treated for the injury. After 8 days in the hospital, Roosevelt went back on the campaign trail.
Did you know?
In 1937, at the age of 25 years old, Ernestine was alive when on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
