  • Introduction

    Erwin was affectionately known by everyone except his mother (Francis, my great aunt) as 'Peewee' because of his short stature. His cousin was well known in Medina; Teddy Poler was a dwarf who ran a corner grocery for many years. Although Peewee was not a true dwarf he had a bigger than usual head and was shorter than most men. He served in the army as a medic and was on the beach in this position during the D Day invasions. He also assisted in the liberation of one of the more notorious concentration camps in Germany. He was a sweet guy who was devoted to his mother. He was a heavy drinker and fought a lot. He was so good to kids, and always ready to do a favor. Took me around town on his errands and bought me ice cream and lunch and listened to my childhood rambling. Called me 'Schnicklefritz.'
